So I have recently been re-watching the old (and terrible) Legend of Zelda cartoon with my son, Link (yep). It’s fun to remember how much I loved this show as a kid, and then witness in horror what it was really like. The thing that keeps striking out at me now though is just how terrible of a person Zelda is. You can tell the original writers for the show had a definite view of men and women in mind. The result is a slapstick back-and-forth banter between the ever stupid-pervy-lazy Link and the uptight-bipolar-condescending Zelda. We all know now that the cartoon was garbage, but as I watch it again, the wounds feel new. My son is too young for the games, so I wish there was a truer medium for me to introduce the characters. Until that time though, I’m stuck with “Not a chance, ‘Heroooo'” and “Hey! Excuuuuuuuuse me Princess!”.
Granted, it’s a kid’s show from 1,000,000 years ago that could never be remade today. So I should probably just sit back and enjoy it for all of its terribleness.
BTW, this one’s for you:
